A top rated Indian restaurant in Sandy, UK was cited for serving customers fake Smirnoff Vodka. The restaurant was found after lab tests confirmed the fake alcohol which may have been served as far back as Christmas of 2016. The operation was run by Bedfordshire officers which included 40 locations according to a statement by the Council’s public protection team.

The Tajmahal Restaurant located at 144 London Rd, Sandy SG19 1DN, UK faced the magistrate this week and was ordered to pay fines totaling £4,070 after pleading guilty to four counts of selling counterfeit alcohol. The Tajmahal Restaurant was found to be selling fake Smirnoff vodka. The highly rated Indian Restaurant was caught up in a sting by the Central Bedfordshire Council’s public protection team during the busy Christmas Season, with the adjudication of the charges taking place this week before the Luton magistrates.

The Central Bedfordshire Council’s public protection team carried out multiple on-site checks looking for businesses that were selling fake or watered-down alcohol being passed off as known brands. The Tajmhal Restaurant was one of two restaurants ensnared by the Central Bedfordshire Council’s public protection team, who has not yet named the second restaurant involved.

The manager Mohammed Ali, 41, pleaded guilty to the four counts of selling the counterfeit Smirnoff vodka, which resulted in £800 in fines, £1,350 costs and £40 surcharge – making a total of £4,070 issued by the presiding magistrate.

After the Court proceedings, Councillor Ian Dalgarno issued a warning to other establishments tempted to boost profits by selling watered down of fake alcohol that the Council will continue to take this crime very seriously Those establishments and employees face fines and criminal charges that could result in jail time for selling fake alcohol. Businesses were advised to only buy alcohol from reputable suppliers and keep their VAT receipts to verify the purchase.

Addressing Consumers, Councillor Ian Dalgarno said, “There is an even more serious side to this too, because fake alcoholic drinks may contain dangerous chemicals such as cleaning fluids, nail polish remover and screen wash which can cause serious illness or even death.”
