As part of a raid by Mexican Officials Iberostar Paraíso del Mar, located in Palaya del Carmen was named as one of the targets in relation to fake and tainted alcohol being served to tourists at these resorts and bars. This raid conducted on Friday August 11, 2017 and targeted 43 establishments in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The Mexican Authorities confiscated over 10,000 gallons of fake alcohol during the raid from 31 establishments that catered to tourists, some of which offered all-inclusive packages and many of which have 5 star ratings.  Be conscious of the alcohol you consume, the fake alcohol confiscated in this raid is under suspicion of the cause of death in cases of sudden death of tourists.

The Iberostar Paraíso del Mar, was the hotel where tragically twenty-year-old Abbey Conner died during a family vacation to the Mexican resort in January 2017. Mexican tourist destinations have been under heavy scrutiny since as more cases are coming to light.

I recently consumed some tequila while staying at Iberostar Paraíso Del Mar with my wife in August 2019. We had brought our own alcohol since there had been reported cases of alcohol poisoning and such at the resort. I had been drinking my own alcohol and decided to order a tequila sunrise while on the beach from a waiter. After consuming three of them, I began to act irrationally, had to be persuaded by my wife to come back to our hotel room to “sleep it off” and became verbally aggressive and paranoid. I do not remember two hours of my day and lost my memory of what happened after I came to. When I awoke in my room not understanding where I was or how I got there, my wife suggested that I got to the hospital and I said yes since I was truly terrified. The doctor said that even though I smelled like alcohol, I passed the field sobriety tests and didn’t appear to show any signs of overconsumption of alcohol. I drank some pedialite and attempted to calm myself and salvage the time we had left on our vacation.
The next day when we went to report this incident, the hotel employees in a condescending and almost mocking manner, told my wife and I that I probably had a bad reaction to the drinks. One employee went as far as trying to convince us that we did some drugs. He then told us that this little inconvenience shouldn’t stop us from drinking and enjoying our time left at the resort. Having drank for a long time and being a larger framed male, I knew that this was not the case at all. The employees attempted to make us come back to talk to a manager about my issues and they tracked us down later in the day to attempt to get us to talk with the manager. The manager was reassuring and told us that they do so much to prevent alcohol tampering and issues in relation to drug usage at the resort. I am still having memory issues of the day and I know that I drank tequila that was not normal.
