A distillery mistake has led to the recall of 654 bottles of Georgian Bay Vodka from the shelves of retailers by order of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). What led to the recall was the discovery that the vodka distilled by the Georgian Bay Gin Company was twice the alcohol proof that was listed on the bottle. The bottles of the recalled Georgian Bay Vodka listed the proof as 40%, which is the normal proof for the liquor, after being tested by LCBO, it was discovered that the proof was 81%.
Georgian Bay Distillers is a small batch distiller based in Toronto. When the mistake was realized they cooperated with the LCBO in getting all the extra proof vodka off the shelves and out of the warehouses as quickly as possible. Georgian Bay blamed a dissolution process for the mistake. After Vodka is distilled it is dissolve a couple of times until the proof is at 40% alcohol. If a step is missed in the dissolution process this would account for a higher proof.
In working with the LCBO in recalling the extra potent Vodka, the distillers notified the board that it would recheck all their quality control standards to ensure that the problem would not reoccur. As with all alcoholic beverages, the proof determines the strength of the drink. With the proof of this recalled Georgian Bay Vodka being more than double its labelled content, unsuspecting consumer could end up inebriated without intention. The consequences of unintended inebriation could be dire, as in a driver who only intended to have one shot, and the contents of his shot was as strong as two.
Georgian Bay Distillers and the LCBO are confident that they have retrieved most of the bottles involved in this recall. The recalled bottles are 750 ml bottles, Batch 19 with a UPC code of 6 27843 36216 6. If you should have any of the remaining outstanding bottles, they should be returned for a full refund at the place of purchase.
This is another example of the importance of SafeProof, double alcohol content could lead to double trouble.
